Develop a Topic Sentence

Write a strong topic sentence.

An effective topic sentence contains the following information:
PurposeRange of IdeasTonePositionThe PointLocation
The purpose explains why the writer wrote something and for which specific audience.
The range of ideas displays all the writer’s organized thoughts in order to narrow the topic.
The tone reveals the feeling or mood the writer is trying to express about a topic.
The position shows the writer's belief, opinion, and attitude about a topic.
The point of the topic sentence presents the significance of all supporting sentences in a paragraph.
The topic sentence may appear at the beginning of a paragraph, in the middle, or not at all if implied.

Weak or unsuitable topic sentences are often too broad or too narrow. A good topic includes the paragraph’s range of ideas; if not, it will confuse or misinform the reader.

  • For example: The topic sentence Technology is changing the world is too broad. A reader might expect a long essay about many different types of technology.
  • The topic sentence Smartphone applications are changing online shopping is more specific – the reader instantly understands and can predict the topic.

Likewise, a topic that is too narrow will limit the writer.

  • For example: The topic sentence ABC Company’s latest weather app is too narrow because it limits the writer’s range of ideas and position to just a detail.

Read the topic sentences below and decide if each is too broad (general), too narrow (specific), or good. Submit answers for additional comments.
