Creating a first draft is an important part of the writing process. The planning you have done so far (brainstorming, creating an outline, and developing a topic sentence) will help you write a first draft much more easily than without it. Think about additional ideas and ways to logically organize them as your develop the first draft.

It is time to put your ideas into a paragraph. At this point, you should have brainstormed topics, created an outline with specific ideas and a pattern of organization, and developed an appropriate topic sentence – the point of your main idea. Next, think about expressing your ideas clearly for your audience.

Freewriting is an excellent way to begin building the first draft of any type of writing. Using your outline, write the first sentence. Begin with the topic sentence for a paragraph. For an essay, a thesis statement usually appears at the end of the first paragraph.

  • For example: School uniforms should be required in order to provide students a better learning experience.

Add transition words in order to narrow the main idea into logical pieces that a reader can easily follow. Also, don’t forget to vary sentence structure.
