Scanning

What is scanning?

Scanning means searching quickly for information.

When you scan, you look for specific information, such as a name or date, without reading an entire text. Scanning is different from skimming because it requires the reader to find a piece of information, not the main idea. We scan things all the time, such as contacts in a phone, a date, or quote from an article

Practice: Use scanning to find all the numbers and dates in the following passage:

The automobile has an interesting history. In 1896, a pair of brothers and former bicycle makers named Duryea manufactured the first dozen or so vehicles in the United States. By 1900, as many as one hundred different brands and eight thousand cars were on America’s roads. In 1901, an 18-year-old blacksmith’s son named Ransom E. Olds produced the “Runabout,” a vehicle with an internal combustion engine.
