Two Basic Types of Questions

WH Questions
Also called "open-ended" or "information" questions

These questions ask for specific information and cannot be answered with just "yes" or "no".

  • What time is it?
  • Where are you going?
  • Who is leaving now?
  • Why did you say that?
  • How did you locate the restaurant?
Yes-No Questions
For affirmative or negative responses

These questions can be answered with "yes" or "no" and use helping verbs.

  • Has Jane arrived?
  • Do they study grammar?
  • Is Christopher upset?
  • Will Jack help?
  • Can she go?

🔧 Question Formation Rules

🟢 Yes-No Questions with Helping Verbs
Helping Verb + Subject + Main Verb + ?

Place the helping verb before the subject when a helping verb exists in the sentence.

Jane has arrived.
Has Jane arrived?
They study grammar.
Do they study grammar?
🔴 Questions with "Be" Verb
Be Verb + Subject + Complement + ?

The "be" verb follows the same pattern as helping verbs.

Christopher is upset.
Is Christopher upset?
She is leaving now.
Is she leaving now?
🟠 Questions without Helping Verbs
Do/Does/Did + Subject + Base Verb + ?

Insert "do" (before the subject) if no helping verb exists in the sentence.

They study grammar.
Do they study grammar?
She likes coffee.
Does she like coffee?
🔵 WH Questions
WH Word + Helping Verb + Subject + Main Verb + ?

Use the same helping verb in the question and answer. If no helping verb exists, use "do".

John is leaving now.
Who is leaving now?
Susan will arrive at ten o'clock.
When will Susan arrive?
