Some words have more than just a grammatical meaning.

Content words

Content words in English have meaning. They are words like "flat," "internet," and "happiness."

Function words

Function words, on the other hand, only have meaning in grammar. These are words like "the" "than" and "with."

Pronunciation

Pronunciation may change when you use content or function words. For example, the th in the function word though /'ðoʊ/ is pronounced differently from the content word theory /'θɪəri/.
